Biographie

Né à Strasbourg en 1985, l'intérêt de Yoann Lossel pour l'art et la peinture commence par la découverte des anciens maîtres de la Renaissance, qu'il rencontre dans son foyer et dont il contemple les oeuvres pendant son enfance. Fasciné par les chefs-d'œuvre à couper le souffle représentant des thèmes mystérieux et développant une créativité fabuleuse, il rêve alors de devenir peintre.

Après un cursus de trois ans dans la section dessin narratif à l'École Pivaut de Nantes, Yoann Lossel travaille comme illustrateur indépendant pour les éditions Milan avant de s'installer en Brocéliande et de poursuivre son travail pour les éditions Ouest-France et Soleil parmi tant d'autres. À l'âge de 25 ans, il quitte finalement le monde de l'édition pour se consacrer à des collaborations avec des galeries d'art. Durant ce temps, ses goûts personnels, alimentant son univers artistique, maturent et évoluent vers des aspirations plus délicates et raffinées. Ainsi, il s'entoure de l'iconographie qui le passionne comme les maîtres du Mouvement Symboliste, Pré-Raphaelites, Art Nouveau et Arts & Craft de manière à nourrir et décorer son inspirant espace de travail. Simultanément, pour réaliser les œuvres qu'il a à l'esprit, Yoann Lossel  investit dans des matériaux de haute qualité (papier, encre, imprimante...) et  construit même sa propre presse pour gaufrer ses tirages d'art. Ce cadre florissant donne naissance à la technique méticuleuse de la dorure. La marque de fabrique qu'il maîtrise maintenant pour illuminer son œuvre.

Yoann Lossel a exposé son travail dans de nombreuses galeries en France et en Belgique, mais aussi outre-mer en Angleterre, en Australie et aux États-Unis, y compris à la "Society of Illustrators" de New York. Il a été régulièrement invité par de nombreuses galeries aux États-Unis comme la "Century Guild" et la "Nucleus Gallery" à Los Angeles ainsi que le "Krab Jab Studio" à Seattle.

En 2013, Spectrum, qui fait la promotion des arts fantastiques et offre une vitrine annuelle pour les artistes contemporains, l'a honoré en publiant son œuvre "The Golden Age" sur la couverture intérieure de son 20e livre. En 2015, il reçoit la récompense «Ensemble de l'oeuvre» du concours organisé par "Infected by Art" Volume 3 et une «Mention d'honneur» dans la catégorie dessin du Concours international "d'Art Renewal Center' 2014/2015.

Il travaille actuellement sur un livre à venir et la préparation d'une exposition solo.

« Les grands paysages me fascinent. Je m'y suis toujours projeté avec beaucoup de force et d'imagination. Avant de m'enfermer dans l'atelier pour figurer ces mondes, je suis avant tout un contemplatif à la recherche d'atmosphères, de lieux et de présences. Je crois que c'est le hors-champ auquel j'accorde une attention particulière, cette infime nuance qui transforme un espace en une histoire. L'arbre qui, avec le temps, va adopter une posture, la pierre qui à force d'érosion se distinguera de toutes les autres, le vent qui transformera la lande et poussera l'aubépine à se développer à l'horizontal. Ces arbustes que l'on dénichera au sommet des collines du Devon ou dans les estampes d'Hokusai.

J'ai une affection toute particulière pour les ruines : cet espace où le temps devient palpable, quelque part entre civilisation et monde sauvage. J'essaie d'offrir à ces lieux une population qui les habite, qui les intègre avec cohérence. Pour nourrir la profondeur de ces scènes, j'ai opté pour l'utilisation de feuilles d'or qui génèrent un quatrième plan par leurs manières de réfléchir la lumière. Ainsi naissent des crépuscules et des aubes. »

« Certains peintres et dessinateurs m'ont marqué au plus haut point, ils me nourrissent de leurs regards et de leurs démarches. Ce sont ces maîtres, passés et présents, qui m'invitent à m'engager dans cette voie. Leurs explorations des grands thèmes classiques m'accompagnent au quotidien. »

Born in Strasbourg, France, in 1985, Yoann Lossel’s interest in art and painting began with the discovery of the Old Master paintings of the Renaissance, which he found at home and contemplated during his childhood. Fascinated by the breathtaking masterpieces depicting its mysterious themes and filled with fabulous creativity, he has been dreaming about becoming a painter ever since.

After a three-year degree in applied arts and narrative drawing at the Ecole Pivaut of Nantes, Yoann Lossel worked as a freelance illustrator for the Milan Edition before moving to Brocéliande and be a freelance illustrator for Ouest-France and Soleil Edition, amongst many others. At the age of 25, he eventually left the publishing world to devote himself to exhibitions and collaborations with art galleries. Meanwhile his personal tastes feeding his artistic universe maturated and changed to something more delicate and refined. In this way, he surrounded himself with the iconography he worshiped the most such as the Symbolist Movement, Pre-Raphaelites, Art Nouveau and Arts & Craft to furnish and decorate his beautiful and inspiring workspace. Simultaneously, to achieve the luxurious works of art he had in mind, Yoann Lossel invested in high-quality materials (paper, ink, printer,..) and even built his own press to emboss his fine art prints. This blooming setting gave rise to the golden leaves meticulous technique. The trademark that he now masters to illuminate his work.

Yoann Lossel exhibited his work in many galleries in France and Belgium but also overseas in England, in Australia and in the United States including at the Society of Illustrators of New York. He is often invited by some galleries in the US like the Century Guild and the Nucleus Gallery in Los Angeles as well as the Krab Jab Studio in Seattle.

In 2013, Spectrum, which promotes the fantastic arts and provide an annual showcase for contemporary artists, honored him by publishing his work "The Golden Age" in the case front cover of its 20th book. In 2015, he received the « Body of work » award of the Infected by Art Volume 3 contest and a « Honorable Mention » in the drawing category of the 2014/2015 International Art Renewal Center Salon Competition.

He is currently working on a coming book and the preparation of a solo show.

« Large landscapes fascinate me. I have always admired the strength that emerges from these visions. Before locking myself up into the workshop to represent these worlds, I am primarily a contemplative searching for spaces and atmospheres. I think this is the "outside the frame" that I pay particular attention to, this tiny nuance that transforms a space into a story. Time that shapes the tree and forces it to adopt a posture, the erosion of the stone which distinguished this very one from all the others, the wind modifying the moor and forcing the hawthorn to grow horizontally. These shrubs you identify in the hilltops of Devon or the paintings of Hokusai.

I have a special affection for ruins : this spaces where time becomes tangible, somewhere between civilization and wilderness. I try to to offer these places a population whom inhabits them, which integrates them with consistency. To feed the depth of these scenes, I opted for the use of gold leaf which generate background by their way of reflecting light. Thus are born twilights and dawns. »
